MAMA-86 Statement on the Tragedy at Gribovichi Landfill near Lviv Print
Thursday, 02 June 2016 12:40

MAMA-86 extends its deep condolence to all affected by consequences of another environmental accident which occurred on May 30, 2016 at Gribovichi landfill, claimed four lives and negatively affected the environment and health of local residents.

This event is a logical consequence of unwillingness of the competent power branches of all levels to solve the problem of solid household waste in a comprehensive manner despite existence of numerous initiatives, appeals, proposals, and draft laws (according to People’s Deputy Hanna Hopko, over ten draft laws are sitting with the Parliament at the moment (https://uainfo.org/blognews/1464762268-tragediya-u-gribovichah-yak-virishiti-problemu-smittya.html)) intended to improve the current situation with solid household waste in Ukraine.

MAMA-86 shares opinions and supports efforts of all people facilitating development of a modern effective system of handling solid household wastes in Ukraine and supports the Appeal of the public interest international law organisation "Environment-People-Law" (http://www.epl.org.ua/events/2605-hromadskist-zaklykaie-pryslukhatysia-do-ievropeiskykh-investoriv-zapozychyty-ikhni-tekhnolohii-ta-pryshvydshyty-implementatsiiu-zakonodavstva-v-sferi-povodzhennia-iz-pobutovymy-vidkhodamy) urging responsible state agencies and local authorities to transfer from promises to real actions to solve waste-related problems in Lviv oblast as well as in entire Ukraine.

We do believe that the government must urgently make initial steps in this direction, namely:

  1. To pass a new version of the Bill "On Waste" which was developed according to the Plan for Implementing the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement
    (http://www.kmu.gov.ua/control/uk/cardnpd?docid=247612342);
  2. To draft and adopt laws and regulations dealing with new types of hazardous waste which are rapidly generated as part of solid household waste (electronic, mercuric, medical, and pharmaceutical waste) as well as waste from packaging of hazardous materials, such as pesticides;
  3. To approve and fund measures envisaged by the National Program for Handling Waste for 2013-2020 (http://search.ligazakon.ua/l_doc2.nsf/link1/NT0577.html).
